Fasten the circular economy transition

Shifting the current linear system to a circular one involves everyone and everything. No country, as of yet, satisfies the basic needs of its citizens within the ecological boundaries of the planet.

Fastening the transition requires cross-border collaboration. Measuring and monitoring is key and it’s wide acknowledged that exactly this needs to be made easier.

Scope and aim of the CBT

The development of a Circular Benchmark Tool (CBT) within INTERREG EUROPE REPLACE is executed to assess and monitor the progress towards a Circular Economy in and outside its regions.


The key aim of CBT is to act as a replicable system for knowledge exchange to improve circular performance in the regions.


The CBT is simple and easy to use and can be applied in addition to existing quantitative measurements as a qualitative tool


Note that further development of the CBT is done in collaboration with regions.

Methodology

The CBT is developt based on a scientific approach and practical principles. First reviews of the prototype 1.0 can be found here. The development process is iterative by nature, not only as ‘Circular Economy’ is a field in constant development, also because ‘learning, validating and applying’ are used as a blueprint.

CBT timeline based on Technology Readiness Levels (TRL)

Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) are indicators of the maturity level of particular technologies. This measurement system provides a common understanding of technology status and addresses the entire innovation chain.


The indication of CBT’s TRL level including details about the timeline are to be found in this figure. End of 2021, after launching the new prototype within the EU regions, TRL 6 is expected to achieve.
